A BARBER, who was diagnosed with testicular cancer earlier this year, has donated his upper lip to raise money for charity.

Darren Johnson, who owns Dr Barbers in Ampthill, has enrolled the help of customers and local businesses to raise awareness of testicular and prostate cancer, by growing moustaches as part of the annual Movember event.

The charity is close to Darren’s heart as he was diagnosed testicular cancer earlier this year

He said: “During a routine check I was told I had cancer. It’s a horrible moment but, fortunately, it was discovered early and I was treated quickly.

“It was only a couple of months ago but so far it is a case of so far, so good – you can never be 100 per cent but I acted quickly and that is the main thing.

“I’m a positive guy and I believe throwing myself into my new business, along my wife Donna’s amazing support, has helped me.”

As well as raising awareness of the issue, Darren is also urging men to get themselves checked out if they spot anything abnormal.

He added: “We’re hoping to raise some money for charities but, more importantly, it is imperative we raise awareness of this terrible disease and remind men to be vigilant.

“The moustaches are coming on nicely, the inspiration is varied, from Lee van Cleefe and Salvador Dali, to Burt Reynolds and George Michael.

“But there is a serious side to this and one I know about only too well. My advice is simple: if you have any concerns and think there is a problem, go to the doctor ASAP. I know this from first hand experience – it could be the most important decision you ever make.”
